13.01.2026: Vortrag im Ethnologischen Kolloquium von Laura Ogden
7. Januar 2026, von Christina Fastner
Prof. Dr. Laura Ogden (Maastricht University) zum Thema:
Podcasting Kinship: A co-research project on transnational siblings with Ghanaian-background youth in Hamburg
This co-research project responds to two themes emerging in my research in the past couple of years. First, as I stayed in touch with participants from my PhD on transnational youth mobility between Germany and Ghana, I noticed they were becoming increasingly interested in what it means to ‘do research’, not just be the subject of it, as they matured and encountered research in various forms through university and work. Second, I was becoming increasingly interested in transnational sibling relationships between young people in migrant families, as a site to explore young people’s contemporary kinship structures in a world in which families are increasingly globally dispersed yet closely connected through travel and digital media. Together with some of my PhD participants, I designed this co-research project, in which 11 young people of Ghanaian migration background living in Hamburg received methodological, ethical, and analytical training in a series of 4 workshops hosted at Hamburg University. The co-researchers conducted interviews with other Ghanaian-background youth in Germany about their transnational sibling relationships and produced podcasts presenting their analyses. In this colloquium I will present the website platform showcasing the co-researchers’ podcasts and discuss some of the project’s methodological and empirical benefits, challenges, and trade-offs.

Wir freuen uns sehr auf die Veranstaltung, zu der wir alle interessierten Personen herzlich einladen.
Das Kolloquium findet immer dienstags im großen Seminarraum des Instituts statt:
