Ethnographic Film
Visual anthropology and ethnographic cinematography have formed an important part of the curriculum at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology in Hamburg since the late 1980s. We offer regular seminars on ethnographic film analysis, indigenous films, and the anthropology of television, among other subjects, and on ethnographic film practice. In the BA program, visual anthropology and ethnographic cinematography are offered in professional skills training (ABK) modules.
The seminars on the methodological and practical principles of visual anthropology are offered on a regular basis and provide an introduction to the most important aspects of anthropological film practice. These seminars focus primarily on practical training; students will acquire and apply knowledge in film research, concept development, camera handling, and digital video cut. Instead of writing seminar papers, students produce their own five-to-ten minute films. These will be presented at a public event at the end of the seminar. In diesem Film begleiten wir einen tibetischen Mönch in seinem Alltag. Wir zeigen, wie dieser zwischen Spiritualität und Großstadt, zwischem dem Tempel und den Straßen Hamburgs, gestaltet und gelebt wird.
Abwechselnd Interviews mit einem Protagonisten, der kurz über das Netzwerk, seine Organisation und die Aufgabenverteilung Auskunft gibt sowie einzelne Szenen mit einer Flüchtlingsfamilie (er ehemaliger Frußballtrainer der syrischen Jugendfussballnationalmannschaft), in denen zum Beispiel gezeigt wird, wie über Sport und Kochen erste Integrationsansätze sichtbar werden.
Der Film begleitet die hamburger Akustik-Punk Band Liedfett auf dem Weg vom Proberaum bis zum Album Release Konzert im Übel & Gefährlich. Zwischen Schweiß, Alkohol und lauter Musik wird der "Mikrokosmus Band" sichtbar, der aus festen Ritualen, Freundschaft und Leidenschaft für die gemeinsame Sache besteht. Die entstandenen Musikaufnahmen sind mit der Zustimmung von der Band Liedfett in dem Film verwendet worden.
