Abstract:
Central features of the pre-conquest systems of kinship and marriage in Southeast Africa can be reconstructed with some confidence, and tied in with the structural dynamics of the chieftainships and with the symbolic dimensions of settlements. Certain aspects of 20th century developments may be understood as transformations of these structural forms.
