Philip Atta Mensah completed his Master's thesis "How the Slave Dungeons at Fort William in Anomabu, Ghana, Served as Tools of Subjugation and Psychological Control in the Transatlantic Slave Trade" in the Master's program Dependency and Slavery Studies at the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies in November 2025.
The thesis draws on the ethnographic and photogrammetric data collected by our team during fieldwork in Ghana in February 2025. It examines how the architecture of the slave dungeons at Fort William served not only as a means of physical confinement, but also as an instrument of psychological control and subjugation.
