Building Wellbeing: An Ethnography of Temporary Refugee Housing in Berlin and Brandenburg
This PhD project, funded by the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, will explore the lived experiences of refugees in temporary accommodation. Despite it being such a crucial aspect for those who have endured traumatic circumstances, the connections between displacement, homemaking and well-being are currently understudied. By focusing on the homemaking practices that refugees perform within their domestic space, I hope to uncover the various conceptions and practices of well-being that refugees bring with them and the way in which they are maintained or transformed within a new environment. Taking an ethnographic approach will enable participants to contribute their own individually shaped conceptions of well-being. This will include participant-led methodologies such as the ‘shared-walk’ and ‘auto-photography’ which will allow participants to take an active role in the data collection process.
