Dublin
Dublin serves as a typical example of the consequences of global city-port development processes. After the major port functions had been moved out of the city, former working class areas fell into dereliction and are now being targeted for urban renewal.
The loss of opportunities for casual manual labour in the port has led to a high degree of unemployment and social stigmatisation in these quarters, giving rise to massive conflicts with the new type of inhabitants and investors drawn into the area by urban renewal.
Despite these problems, Dublin´s dockside area shows a high potential for self-organisation based on traditional local identities and neighbourhood networks. This has recently led to various forms of participatory action and joint decision-making in the restructuring of port-related neighbourhoods.
